Human Body
Ayurveda is the holistic science of life which is a combination of senses, Mind, Body and soul requiring care leading to qualitative health and longevity.
Under this science we talk of the three Dosha’s of the Body: Kapha, Pitta and Vata. The presence of all three Dosha’s in our Body in natural proportions make for a balanced Body.
The Dosha’s are biological energies found throughout the Human Body and Mind. They govern all physical and mental processes and provide every living being with an individual blueprint for health and fulfillment.
Fingers and thumb of our hand represent the five elements of our Body known as Panchamahabhuthas and as understood in common parlance are stated below:-
- Thumb represents FIRE and is being shown for accomplishing a job or wishing good luck for the same
- Next finger- the Fore Finger/Index Finger represents AIR and is also known as killer finger as when a person has a verbal duel then he may show his index finger to threaten the person on the other side and signifies ego and sense of revenge.
- Middle finger being the lengthiest of all represents SKY and is being used while brushing our teeth and for any other work like application of our saliva in our eyes in the morning.
However the Killer Finger (Index Finger) and the Middle Finger when made into a V sign, it is shown to represent different things under different cultures and context; though in Asia, it is normally shown for victory.
- Next Finger- Ring Finger represents EARTH and if someone’s Ring Finger is longer than the Index Finger, it is said that the person shall be good looking, aggressive with a higher risk taking tendency and a heart throb. This finger is considered pious and is normally used for Tilak – applying chandan, etc. in the middle of the forehead of the other person.
- The smallest finger represents Water and we normally show this finger only to the other person indicating that we are going for urination.
The Dosha’s derive from these Five Elements and their related properties. These elements interact and exist in combination, in which one or more elements dominate.
(Kapha) is composed of Water and Earth, (Pitta) of Fire and Water, (Vata) of Space and Air. When different combinations/exclusions of the thumb and finger/s are made, they are called Mudras of various types and are known by different names and affect the Body according to the Mudra that we make.
It is a traditional belief amongst Hindus that the Human Body is embodied by a Soul and comprises of these Five Elements. Therefore when one dies, the Soul leaves the Body to form another Life. With this belief the Hindus consign their dead to Fire and it reshapes itself into these Five Elements on being burnt and accordingly, the ashes are consigned to the Holy Waters of a River.
The parents and older people blessed all younger folks with a basic blessing “Live Long” and the like of it but the modern concept has changed and the right blessing today is “Live a Long and Healthy Life”. The concept of Long Life has changed with a rider of Health.
The modern sciences have solutions to many of our issues and have been dealt at length by it. But when it comes to our Wellness we need to understand our Body; our Hereditary Character; Genes, which in many ways affects our Health; Lifestyle; Level of Intelligence; Thought Process; Disposition; and the like of it.
Each person is different in shape, size and color with varying levels of basic intelligence and energy. Different genes make the person tall, short, heavy, slim and medium sized.
Besides the environment in which one grows has a general effect on a person along with the food habits; culture; ways of dressing; peer pressure; etcetra which differ from region to region; community to community; all of which have a cascading effect on each person and accordingly, affects their routine.
Daily routine may be followed by males and females which would be different due to gender difference in various aspects of Body constitution and gender specific issues.
So every person is unique with regard to their nature; and the genes in their Body account for different temperament, skills, and habits. While one is hilarious, always smiling, laughing away matters in most difficult times and handling it deftly and bravely without getting out of one’s Mind; another person is always serious and carries the burden of the world on one’s head and is unable to enjoy life even in the best of times.
Besides eating habits differ from person to person making one over eat while the other person hardly eats, some are dull and lazy, whereas some are swift and fast. The thinking capacity of all individuals is also different and quick response to a situation is manifested in one’s own genes and training.
Man is a social animal but in modern times it appears that though animals stick to their rules; but we as socials animals have created our own ideas, influenced by peer pressure; conspicuous effect or so called modern society and its concepts; which are mostly misplaced, and unsuitable for our economic and social strata, thus adversely polluting our Mind and Body. We all need to follow Warren Buffet, one of the world’s richest men, to be able to shrug off the never ending rat race of consumerism.
It would also be interesting to know the daily routine of birds and animals to understand and appreciate how we can follow the animals, and flouting only brings bad health and anomalies in our life.
Our saints observed the birds and animals and understood their behavior, the effects of their postures and how they lived in harmony with their environment.
- The sparrow chugs water while dogs and other animals lick water; thereby giving us a clear indication that we also need to sip and drink water slowly and not gulp water or any liquids while drinking, to be precise.
- The animals do not eat again and again. Once they have eaten at one time, they are left with no desire to eat even the best offered food and hence do not overeat. The lion vomits undigested food after half an hour of eating. It means that the lion is conscious about his health and does not waste its energy in digesting more food than is required for his well-being and throws out undigested food left over in its stomach. We therefore need to eat to live and not live to eat.
- The mother cat gives bath to the kittens by licking their Body. Further if the animals encounter injury, they lick the wound with their tongues and the wound heals up very quickly as the saliva has high medicinal values.
Human saliva has high medicinal properties too and therefore, the tongue should be kept clean and saliva can be applied to the eyes with the middle finger for their proper care as the first morning ritual.
- Animals go to sleep early at night and wake up early in the morning. We do adopt it for our school going children but needs to be followed by us also. All great people rise in brahm muhurat between 4 a.m. to 6 a.m.
- Ever observed how a Crow walks? In Yog this way of walking is known as Crow walking and if it were to be followed by us when willing to do exercises, this walk is ten times more effective than our normal walking and will keep us fit.
- How a Peacock stands represents Mayur (Peacock) asana which is always performed in the last as this asana enables toxics expulsion from the Human Body, strengthens tummy muscles and is a balancing act showing our ability to uphold our Body on our elbows like a Peacock only and our capacity to digest food is tremendously enhanced. A Peacock easily digests termites, ants, lizard’s, poisonous snakes, etc. Ability to perform this asana will bring charm to the face due to higher blood circulation and the performer gets toned down enabling stable behavior.
- Animals eat normal food and chew it properly. They do not take tobacco, drugs, Pan Masala, drink alcohol, smoke bidi /cigarette /cigar etc and the like of them. All these products are manmade and have become a part of fashion/peer pressure amongst youngsters and even adults and are totally uncalled for.
- The cat is the cleanest of all and for its poop, it first creates a small pit and after finishing, it covers the small pit with soil and needs to be followed by all using the open fields.
- If we imitate the hare posture in which he gets ready to fight or run away, in Yog it is known as Shashank Asana. This Asana helps in elevating the disorders of our reproductive organs and this position leads to tranquility. Prior to this position, we are in Vajrasana which is good for digesting food and may be performed at any time of the day as it generally helps in digestion process after every time we eat.
- The animal’s sense of time, weather prediction, and sense of security for themselves is superb and if we were to ever observe, they follow their timings day in and day out and the list is endless.
So when we as human folks follow the basic principles of what animals do, there will be an equilibrium of tri dosha’s namely kapha, pitta and vata resulting in a healthy Body.
Cord Blood Banking- A New Era
With the advanced technology and science, the concept of banking of stem cells derived from umbilical cord and blood has taken prevalence amongst soon-to-be parents due to their unique property to proliferate and differentiate into any cell type and renew and regenerate the damaged area of the Body.
Advanced research and clinical trials have shown that these properties of stem cells enhance the therapeutic potential of cord and cord blood to treat various health conditions.
Cord blood collection is a simple and safe procedure carried out once the baby is born and separated from the mother after birth. The sample is then sent to the laboratory for further processing, testing and cryopreservation. Once the stem cells are stored below -150 C, they can be retrieved for treatment any time in the future.
A number of cord blood banks have been established over the last decade. One of the most renowned banks in Asia pacific region is Cord Life, which is the oldest and largest network of Stem cell banks in South East Asia, with operations in 10 countries and can be reached at www.cordlifeindia.com.
Genes of children
We have all heard about warrior Arjuna’s son Abhimanyu of Mahabharata who enters the chakravieu but was unable to come out, as Arjuna’s wife Subhadra goes to sleep when Arjun could narrate only the technique of entering into the chakravieu when Abhimanyu was still in the womb of Subhadra.
So based on that theory it was stated that Abhimanyu could only break the chakravieu and enter but could not come back. The old saying goes that this guy has learnt from the womb of his mother. The present day living example is that of the Mother and daughter playing a Bach double concerto. The daughter Alisa Sadikova, a Russian, is a great musician. She is also an incredibly talented child prodigy and is very young and has clearly inherited her mother’s talents right from the childhood. It shows that genes play a great role in developing the strengths and weaknesses of our child; thereafter it is the child’s Lifestyle that keeps one well. A child in the womb is deeply affected by the Parents work, knowledge and behavior, which it gathers during pregnancy.
Similarly it is also possible that some genetic defects of the parents may pass on to the child and it may be born with those genetic defects inherently. Despite adoptions being common, it is parent’s luck as to what kind of child they get on adoption of an orphan of whatever age unless it is from a known source.
Due to mother’s inability to conceive or being not healthy enough to hold the child, the surrogacy has come into vogue. Due to some difficulty with the man, IVF and other similar measures can be adopted.
Recently a 15 year old Iraqi girl got a new lease of life after she received stem cells from an unrelated German Donor.
The girl underwent a bone marrow transplant in a hospital at Faridabad (Haryana)(India). The matching was done through
International data base, as reported in The Times of India in April 2017 by Prabhakar.Sinha@TimesGroup.com.

Human Body
Humans have five vital organs that are essential for survival.
These are: Brain, Heart, Kidneys, Liver and Lungs.
The Human Body is like a machine with three trillion pores in the Body which are basically tiny hair follicles all over the Body except on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The skin of the Body makes about 12 to 16 % of our Body weight. Body and Mind consists of about 70% water with variations which is a hydrated condition and any lower levels tend to bring dehydration. Our Body is 48% to 69% water; our brain tissue is 75% water. However Body water percentage is based on number of factors like age, health, weight and sex.
The average adult takes over 20000 breaths a day. Each day, the kidneys process about 50 gallons of blood to filter out about half a gallon of waste and water. There are Nine Doors in the Body. The Nine Doors are two eyes, two nostrils, two ears, one mouth, the anus and the genitals and we need to keep them clean and they need to be used wisely with care and each has been discussed subsequently.
Belly Button-
Belly button/navel is a good conduit to heal various parts of our Body.

Nature’s Call
Our bodies consist of a number of biological systems that carry out specific functions necessary for everyday living; besides we undergo various ups and downs in our life making us act in a particular manner. However we should try to release our nature’s call pressure as early as possible, otherwise it will put undesirable adverse pressure on the internal system of the Body. It could be anything like yawning, weeping, urination, passing of stool, hunger, sleep, etcetra.
Earthing of the Human Body
Earth has been struck by lightning and sun rays all year long and carries an enormous negative charge and is rich in electrons.
Small amounts of antimatter constantly rain down on the Earth in the form of cosmic rays and energetic particles from space.
Electrons are a natural source and essential for proper functioning of our immune system and blood circulation; as the electrons pass from one cell to another in the Body and give the Body raw material for healing; thereby stimulating energy, intelligence and rejuvenating the Body and making cell changing easier. It is the most effective, essential, least expensive, and easiest way to attain antioxidant for our Body.
Human Body is pretty conductive as it consists of large number of charged ions (called electrolytes) dissolved in water. Body has 48% to 69% water. Our blood and other Body fluids are therefore good conductors. Our Body works well with these negative electrons.
Their transmission to our Body is possible by our Lifestyle in terms of leather sole shoes/ sandals/ slippers or with any conductive outsole, we wear or we stay bare foot while walking, whether we sleep on earth and eat while sitting on earth and carrying out our basic daily routine.
The Body should be in contact with the earth as much as possible. It would be pertinent to note that in ancient times most of the people walked bare foot like all the animals on this planet but we have given ourselves the various facilities, boasting of various brands of shoes and sandals with outsoles made of all kinds of synthetic rubbers/ plasticizers which breaks our contact with the mother earth and deprives us of its innumerable health benefits.
The same is true of our rubber mat for exercises which needs to be discarded and only conductive material should be used like our normal ancient mat of straw, cotton, cloth, etc.
This negative electron absorption by our Body works like Earthing for our Body as it works in any electrical system installed anywhere in the world and works like the best and the cheapest antioxidant for our Body.
Similarly Sun rays give our bodies about 90% of our Vitamin-D requirements. Being in sun for 5 to 15 minutes is reasonably good for our health.
Sun is essential for absorbing calcium which keeps our Body bone structure intact and reduces the risk of many serious health conditions.
Researchers from Touro University California, USA, have found that nearly 1 billion people worldwide may have deficient or insufficient levels of vitamin D due to chronic disease and inadequate sun exposure related to sun screen use. It nullifies the Body’s ability to produce vitamin D.
The combined advantage of getting negative electrons from the mother earth and the sun basking on sea-sand is a common sight on the beaches of the world though not really understood by us in the right perspective normally, but needs to be appreciated and followed by all, whenever the opportunity is available (as shown in the picture).
Why eating less or light/ fasting is essential
The Body cells change with various frequencies leading to ageing and affecting the appearance of a person. The cells of intestine change every two to four days and those of stomach change every four to nine days. This challenge of change of cells with such frequency in the Body can be countered by giving rest to our Body.
This rest means fasting. In old good days people used to keep fast under religious beliefs as imbibed in them under various pretexts; but the idea underlying was to give rest to our Body system, so that due to the change in cycle of cells the old cells that die, do not remain in the Body. But when no rest period is allowed to the Body, the old cells remain there and new cells will cover them up thus creating small to large bellies around one’s tummy and with larger waists and tiers around the tummy leading to various issues besides ailments and ageing written on our overall appearance.
It is therefore desirable to do fasting once every week. However due to present medical conditions it may not be possible to do fasting, an individual may eat light like salads, fruits and sip coconut water/ lukewarm water with or without mint, coriander, lemon, etc. in appropriate manner as explained later.
Understanding of Balancing Body pH (‘Potential of Hydrogen’)
The simple understanding of our Body and its limitations will balance the tri Dosha’s and create an equilibrium which may also be called as maintaining the pH of our Body in scientific terms. pH (‘Potential of Hydrogen’) is a measure of acidity or alkalinity of water soluble substances.
The pH range is from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Anything above 7 is alkaline, anything below 7 is considered acidic. Theoretically a healthy Body pH without cancer has acid alkaline balance almost equal. But a healthy Body is slightly alkaline measuring approximately 7.4 pH.
The Human Body is an indivisible, integrated organism and there are various mechanisms in our Body that work together to maintain a proper pH balance throughout our Body. The pH in the human digestive tract varies greatly. The pH of saliva is 6.5 to 7.5 and of the lower portion of the stomach is secreting hydrochloric acid and has a pH 1.5 to 4.0. Small intestine pH changes to 7.0 to 8.5. This is where 90% of the absorption of nutrients is taken in by the Body.
If we have a health problem, most likely we are acidic. Research shows that unless the Body’s pH level is slightly alkaline, the Body cannot heal itself. So, no matter what type of modality we choose to use to take care of our health problem, it won’t be fully effective until the pH level is up. If our Body’s pH is not balanced, we cannot effectively assimilate vitamins, minerals and food supplements.
The Body has to have a balanced pH like most living things on Earth else it will not function correctly. The alkaline level is very important because research has already proven that disease cannot survive in an alkaline state and yet they thrive in an acidic environment.
An acidic balance will decrease the Body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients, decrease the energy production in the cells, decrease its ability to repair damaged cells, decrease its ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumor cells thrive, and make it more susceptible to fatigue and illness.
The truth is everyone has different nutrient requirements, but we all share one thing in common – we all need to have alkaline state to stay healthy.
Check the pH of your saliva using pH Hydrion test strips. When we keep our Body alkaline, we will have sweet lips and rest is left to your own imagination.
